Year 1 Phonics Screening Information
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1. It is a nationally required assessment which takes place in June.
It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
We recommend that parents practice the Phonics Screening Check with your child at home.

Supporting Reading at Home:
- Children will only read books that are entirely decodable, this means that they should be able to read these books as they already know the code contained within the book.
- We only use pure sounds when decoding words (no ‘uh’ after the sound)
- We need parents to support their children, to practise reading their book 4 times across the week working on these skills:
Decode – sounding out and blending to read the word.
Fluency – reading words with less obvious decoding.
Expression – using intonation and expression to bring the text to life
In the autumn term, we will hold a workshop for parents and carers about how we teach reading in school, which will include an introduction to the ELS phonics programme used in school.
When pronouncing sounds we need to ensure that they are pure, this enables children to read words accurately. If we mispronounce these sounds, we will make reading harder for our children. Please watch the videos below for how to accurately pronounce these sounds.
